“The only qualities essential for real success in journalism are rat-like cunning, a plausible manner, and a little literary ability.”
He could have added . . . "The capacity to steal other peoples' ideas and phrases is also invaluable." Mr. Tomalin apparently possessed those qualities admired by H.L. Mencken who may have coined the phrase. However, I've seen it attributed to others as well. Best wishes.

I once stole a very expensive guest from the "This Morning" show by getting in the same taxi as the interviewee and refusing to get out! In a world of chequebook journalism a little guile and a lot of charm can get you a long way.

Great post Tom and very true. Peter Jackson's point underlines the need to seek out the interesting stories and not just expect them to be delivered on a plate. The nature of modern journalism is largely defined by the sheer speed of delivery across new platforms. Ultimately the best stories can only be extracted by talking to people in the best traditions of journalism, irrespective of the pace of new technology, will only ever be a medium to increase the rate and range of delivery (as I type on my iPhone).

Dear Tom,

I wanted to add to your TIP: "Tip: Sometimes you may find that you have to go into the File Manager section and add .old to the name of your existing domain in order for the link with Wordpress to work."

This is the case when you wish to name the blog the same as your domain, ie. domain.com. by default it's set for domain.com/blog. The manual process is in place to help people from copying over there existing data.
